How to properly take measurements for sewing clothes

Basic rules:

Body position: Stand straight, do not slouch, feet shoulder-width apart.

Measuring tape: Hold it parallel to the floor and without tension.

Measurement points: Pay attention to the highest and widest points.

Recording: Record all the data obtained on paper.

What you will need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or pen
  • Paper
  • Mirror (preferably full-length)
  • Help from a friend or relative (for some measurements)

Basic measurements and how to take them:

  1. Neck circumference: Measured at the base of the neck, above the jugular notch.
  2. Chest circumference: Measured at the highest points of the chest.
  3. Underbust: Measured horizontally around the torso, under the breasts.
  4. Waist circumference: Measured at the narrowest part of the waist.
  5. Hip/Thigh Circumference: Measured around the widest part of the hip/thigh.
  6. Back to waist length: Measured from the base of the neck to the waistline.
  7. Sleeve length: Measured from the shoulder seam to the wrist on a slightly bent arm.
  8. Wrist circumference: Measured at the narrowest part of the wrist.
  9. Back width: Measured between the armpits.
  10. Product length: Measured from the waist to the desired length of the product.

Why is it important to take measurements correctly?

Perfect fit: Clothes made to individual measurements fit perfectly and emphasize all the advantages of the figure.

Comfort: Correctly taken measurements ensure maximum comfort when wearing clothes.

Save time and money: Avoiding the need to make adjustments to the finished product.
